American Ugly - The Pilgrim Art

What would your muse be if it was ...

a book: "The Confederacy of Dunces" from Kennedy O' Toole. The author killed himself because he didn't find a publisher (then the book became a bestseller and won the Pulitzer). Some directors tried to adapt it into a movie, but it has always failed. I like the "curse" about this book (and the book itself obviously).
a movie: There's a lot. Right now I'm working on a poster of "The Doomed Generation" from Araki, so I would choose this one.
a city or place: Berlin because it's ugly and friendly. Budapest because it's cheap and friendly,
a sound or tune: "The Chauffeur" by Duran Duran. I heard this song for the first time when I arrived in Berlin.
a magazine: I don't read magazines.
(Life is a prank, we are the turkey). Farce means prank but also stuffing in french, that's a punch untranslatable in english.
an artist: Caravage, I love his paintings and would have loved to live in the 16th century in Italy.
a style icon: Klaus Nomi
She Lost Control - The Pilgrim Art

With Anti.Muse it's no secret, I have a thing for sub- and counterculture. So when you find out about an exhibit celebrating exacly those in form of brilliant illustrations, you don't hesitate, you go. So I went to "Mein Haus am See" in april, to see the original works of an incredibly talented artist named The Pilgrim for the first time. Born in the 80ies in Paris, the French is currently living and working in Berlin. Heavily inspired by dark pop culture, the dominant colour of his works is black. Also part of the band Les Pleureuses, he uses different channels, expressing himself creatively. For the next step in his creative evolution, he is looking for a tattoo apprenticeship in Berlin. Also his next exhibit is taking place in a tattoo studio which is also an art and gallery space - AKA in Berlin Neukölln. The opening will be on july, 23rd. So mark your calendars and come around, I promise, it'll be worth it.

Sisters at work: Paula and Mariàngeles Aguirre of Therapy + Recycle and Exorcise.

What would your muse be if it was ...

a book: Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert
a movie: Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
a city or place: my fantasies
a sound or tune: Survive by David Bowie
a magazine: The Bricks, cause it was the last one to feature an editorial of us.
a quote or a motto: "I am the empire at the end of the decadence." Paul Verlaine // "Nur wer sich ändert bleibt sich treu." Wolf Biermann // "The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom ... You never know what is enough until you know what is more than enough." William Blake, Proverbs of Hell // "When you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there." Lewis Carroll // "If there's anything I hate more than being taken seriously, it's being taken too seriously." Billy Wilder
an artist: David Bowie
a style icon: Debbie Harry, David Bowie, Brigitte Bardot

"Re:Birth" collection captured by Jesus Pastor Photography.

It's not too long I came across a brand called "Therapy + Recycle and Exorcise" at Berlins Alternative Fashion Week in September last year. There I met Mariángeles, a strong woman bold in looks and statements, for the first time. She is one part of the amazingly talented design-duo, which presented their collection "Re:birth" back then at the "Reuse:it" show, an upcycling fashion show, which is part of Berlin Alternative Fashion Week. After this first encounter, I became more and more interested in her brand and followed her work from then on. Coming from a family where making clothes had quite a tradition, Mariángeles made accessories back in Argentina, before coming to Germany and starting "Therapy + Recycle and Exorcise" in 2012 together with her sister Paula. The name of the label is program and a really good metaphor for what the brand is standing for - find yourself, define yourself, recreate yourself, be authentic. I can completely identify with this message and even more interesting is the fact that recreating is not only a metaphor when it comes to the ethics of "therapy + recycle and exorcise". In a free-spirited punk manner the two sisters are masters of DIY and upcycling fashion, reworking and upcycling vintage and second hand pieces. Their latest collection "Courtesans", an hommage to women that from within the system broke rules and created better ones for themselves, gaining power, respect, independence and freedom, was shown at this years Berlin Alternative Fashion Week in March. Futhermore here in Berlin you can buy original "Therapy + Recycle and Exorcise" pieces at Unikat and Sameheads, but you can also find their stuff in boutiques in Paris and Amsterdam. Next places to be conquered are London and Maastricht. For an exclusive interview I recently met Mariángeles in her studio in Berlin Mitte.

Aviv Benn by Stephanie Wächter

"Stop Asking Questions That Don't Matter Anyway" by Aviv Benn

What would your muse be if it was ...

a book: My art books. ALL OF THEM! I always like to joke and say that if there's a fire I will run to save them first thing. As a painter you are told it is better to see paintings in person and a lot is lost in translation when you see a reproduction. But I think an art book offers an intimate and personal way to experience painting.

a movie: Jim Jarmusch's "Limits of Control". A stunning film that offers a glimpse to the mind of a truly creative individual and the intense journey he has to go through to find himself.

a city or place: I love gray cities - the dirt, the street art, people watching on public transport. That's why I love Berlin and my hometown of Tel Aviv: they are both ugly in a very endearing way.

a sound or tune: The voice of Matt Berninger / the lyrics of Andrew Bird.

a magazine: Painter's Table

a quote or a motto: "It was too much of a painting.", a quote of the American painter and my all-time favorite - Philip Guston. While working in his studio on a painting that was almost finished, he realized it wasn't ground breaking enough. He felt he didn't learn anything from it. So he decided to completely destroy it. I think it's a brave and important motto for painters and maybe for life in general - when you get too comfortable it's time to change everything and start over in order to become better and smarter.

an artist: Any painter with guts.

a style icon: Jarvis Cocker circa 1995.

Lately I've been to a gallery in my neighbourhood which I wanted to check out for quite a while. Every once in a while when I was passing, I was sneaking into their windows to see what they have displayed. The last time I walked past I saw people setting up a new show and it looked very promising, so I made sure to not miss out on the opening this time. So on march 17th I went to Art von Frei Gallery to take a look at  "SHARE YOUR TEETH (WITH THE ONES YOU LOVE)" by Aviv Benn, curated by Tina Sauerländer and I was excited and enthusiastic about what I found.

The exhibit seemd like a pink "Dia de los Muertos" inspired art explosion to my eyes and my heart and in fact  "SHARE YOUR TEETH (WITH THE ONES YOU LOVE)" is about death in many ways. As a way to deal with mortality Aviv Benn ironically laughs at death with her paintings. The artist dissects the perfect entity of the body into seperate parts that do not decay, but come to life individually. Cartoons, punk aesthetics, depictions of vanitas or danse macabre as well as the New York street art scene of the 80ies have been influencing the visual language of the artist.

"SHARE YOUR TEETH (WITH THE ONES YOU LOVE)" is the first comprehensive solo show of Aviv Benn, an artist from Tel Aviv, currently living in Berlin. I was happy to catch her on the evening of the opening, to ask her if she'd like to contribute to my interview section "What would your muse be ...". So here we go with an exclusive Q&A with Aviv Benn on Anti.Muse. If you like to go and see  "SHARE YOUR TEETH (WITH THE ONES YOU LOVE)", you still have time, the show is running til april 24th. On april 10th you can come by the gallery from 3 to 6 pm for an artist talk with Aviv Benn, including cake, coffee and a book presentation of her book "TEETH DREAM". To stay up to date on her work you can also follow Aviv Benn on Instagram as well.

What would your muse be ..."

What would your muse be if it was ...

a book: The Holy Bible // The Book of Thoth // M. Foucault "History of sexuality" I.II.III

a movie: The Matrix // Birdman

a city or place: Berlin - LA

a sound or tune: deep techno // Berghain

a magazine: Monopol

a quote or a motto: Life isn't about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself.

an artist: Francis Bacon // JM Basquiat // Picasso // De Kooning // Pollock // Kandinsky // Malevitch

a style icon: Yohji Yamamoto

I didn't study art theory or art history. I'm not an art critic, but I appreciate and praise art, as the unisversal language it is. I find beauty in art, I find hope in art and comfort. I love it, when a piece of art touches me, when it makes me feel something, when it challenges me to think. This is always the case, when it comes to works of the wonderful Vera Kochubey, a russian, Berlin based painter and to me one of my favourite figures in contemporary, avantgardistic art. Vera's intensive artistic language speaks to me so loud and almost violently, that I simply feel shaken up every time I look at her paintings. Her excessive way of expressing herself speaks in an intuitive, almost brutal way to me and my subconscious mind.

The first time I really took notice of Vera and her work was in the summer of 2015, when she did an installation and performance in collaboration with danish-born fashion designer Mads Dinesen at Zalando Fashion House. Instantly I connected to what she was doing and from then on passionately followed her work. I recently had the pleasure to meet her at a store opening during Fashion Week and just took my chance to ask her about taking part in my interview series "What would your muse be ...". So today I'm very happy to present to you my little Q&A with Vera Kochubey.

To stay up to date withe her latest work you can follow Vera on facebook and Instagram.

Man will, dass andere sehen, was man selber sieht, man möchte ihrem Werk Tribut zollen. What would your muse be" gewinnen konnte.

It's always hard to introduce your idols, isn't it? You're struggeling to find the right words, you want to do justice. You want to make all the other people see what you see, you want to pay tribute to what you love about them so much. So here we go, I'm super happy to have the amazing power woman, writer, inflammatory creative, music lover and influencer Renee Ruin on my blog. Since 2010 Renee runs the blog reneeruin.com where she covers great artists, the latest collections in dark fashion, as well as music news related to subcultures like grunge or goth. Reneeruin.com is different, but that's what makes it so utterly good. On her blog Renee Ruin brilliantly gives voice to a certain generation, but not just is she a writer curating and covering cool stuff on her blog, also she is a muse herself, a poet and a jewellry designer. I'm more than happy to have won her for my interview series "What would your muse be" where creatives give insight to what inspires them in their work.

What would your muse be if it was ...

a book: Books are very personal to me. Growing up they were my one escape into another world where I could be myself and unafraid and leave reality behind in pursuit of another. It is impossible for me to choose one book alone. I grew up reading a lot of Stephen King books through the influence of my father and a lot of old poetry. There are a few books that I would definitely call favourites or incredibly important to me personally - "Will there really be a morning?" by Frances Farmer, "Prozac Nation" by Elizabeth Wurtzel and "The Heart is Deceitful above all things" by J.T. Leroy. I read constantly and all kind of different authors. For me, it's important to read often and a lot especially as I write myself. At the moment I'm alternating between Henry Rollins (who I adore immensely) and the amazing Patti Smith.

a movie: There's a lot of movies that hold a special place in my heart but I'm going to be honest here and say one of the first most influential films for me was the original "Footloose" with Kevin Bacon. Small country town, outsider, trouble, music and rebellion. Kevin Bacon's characters name was even "Ren" which was my nickname in school. I loved rock n roll and I could relate to the small town mentality and that feeling of always being an outsider.

a city or place: The world is so huge. I'm not sure I've found my place just yet. I literally just got back from the UK and it was so different and beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the UK and Europe in the next 12 months. One of my ultimate faves though is Los Angeles, USA. Nothing quite beats it. There's truly a vibe of being able to anything and be anyone. I always have a blast there and it's an amazing place for meeting people and creative adventures.

a sound or tune: I am completely obsessed with music. Everything I do in one way or another revolves around music. Whether it's The Cure, Hole, Nine Inch Nails, PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Nick Cave, Chelsea Wolfe, The Sisters of Mercy, Depeche Mode, King Dude, American Nightmare, The Jesus and the Mary Chain ... I love it all and my taste whilst seemingly similar is pretty eclectic. One of my all time favourite tracks is "Gimme Danger" by Iggy Pop & The Stooges. It's raw, gnawing and desperate. If it moves you it means something. I even have a tattoo saying GIMME DANGER.

a magazine: I used to be an avid collector of magazines but sadly, I don't read magazines much anymore. I found myself more often than not reading online magazines, zines and blogs. There's so much out there to be seen and read these days and it's all out of fingertips. I love the physicality of a beautiful magazine but I think these days it's a lot harder to find that kind of magazine, the kind you want to collect anyplace on the bookshelf.

an inspirational quote or a motto: "Scar tissue is stronger than regular tissue. Realize the strength, move on." - Henry Rollins

an artist: Art is everywhere and in everything around us. I have so many amazing talented friends who are artists and I wish I had that kind of talent but I'm more of a wordsmith. I love far too many artists to list and far too many to own all their work!

a style icon: I'm a pretty straight up rock n roll girl when it comes to style. A lot of black, denim and leather, chokers. I love strong, uncompromising women. If I had to pick some style icons I'd definitely say Courtney Love, Allison Mosshart, Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks, Chrissie Hynde, Suzi Quatro, Joan Jett.

What would your muse be ... ?" Rede und Antwort gestanden hat.

What would your muse be if it was ...

a book: Autobiographical works, currently reading "Yes Please" by Amy Poehler. I love any story that charts a journey, I love humans and their ins and outs, that is what inspires me daily, that we are all different, but the same.
a movie: Escape to Witch Mountain. This was one of the first movies I watched where I felt understood. Alien telepathic children with a black cat.
a city or place: Los Angeles. I just moved here and it's currently the exact right spot at the moment for me to feel most connected to myself. I need to feel expansive and I am receiving that here.
a sound or tune: I like silence but if listening then Disney soundtracks or Roy Orbison is the artist I probably listen to most frequently and forever. I also feel incredibly soothed when I listen to the Jurassic Park theme tune.
a magazine: I rarely read magazines anymore, if so it is random and pulled from the stand when I'm drawn to a colour or specific article, but I love anything self created, so often will pick up a zine here and there. My friend Bunny Bissoux makes great art zines and also I just got "There is no right way to meditate" by Yumi Sakugawa which is perfect.
a quote or a motto: I surrender. The practice of releasing sabotaging and anxiety inducting control habits in order to allow life to flow as it should has changed my life and it's my favourite practice to teach my clients. Surrender forever!
an artist: All my favourite artists are my friends, people I love, making things with passion and heart. + This week I saw an exhibit by Raul de Nieves which was fantasic. + Walt Disney, Elena Stonaker, Edward Gorey.
a style icon: The clostest I'ver ever had to a style icon is Mary Poppins. Again, I love humans, so I admire anyone who experiments to find their own authentic style, whether it's jeans and a T or a wild display of accessories and prints.

This rubric is my ode to people who fuel my fire, people who don't live their lifes quietly, people who refuse to fit into any boxes of sterotypical thinking, people who follow their passion. Louise Androlia is one of them. She is a life coach, a writer, she paints and is also into design (she just presented her first jewellery collection in collaboration with Jessica de Lotz). Her positive energy is infectious and if all of this wasn't enough she has a wonderful, super individual and fun style too. Enough reasons for me to be super happy to have Louise on my blog for my interview rubric "What would your muse be ... ?".

Mastermind Tominous stand Anti.Muse für die Rubrik "What would your muse be ...?"

Tominous, frontman of the Berlin based Industrial band Formalin.

What would your muse be, if it was ...

a book: Das Allerletzte
a movie: Clash of the Titans (1981)
a city or place: An old forest
a sound or tune: Deep Drones
a magazine: REVS
an inspirational quote or motto: "One must still have chaos in oneself to give birth to a dancing star." Friedrich Nietzsche
an artist: Valentin Hirsch
a style icon: Boris Bidjan Saberi

Formalin, a fresh, young Industrial band from Berlin, has just created an own genere with their sound. Berlin City Industrial was born in 2010 with the album Bodyminding. For about two years the boys were working on their third album, Supercluster, which turned out to be as furios as supposed to be. The band always ripes apart the traditional, Formalin dares to think outside of the genre-box. This is, why they succeed in creating a remarkable, modern, unique sound. But also the visual concept of the band stands out of the usual. Visuals, artwork and photoshoots are concepted and done by the band to perfection. Even when it comes to fashion Formalin totally get along without any clichés, for their "Collider" video (a single out of the album Wasteland Manifesto) they even collaborated with danish Avantgarde designer Barbara I Gongini. If you want to experience the band live on stage in 2015, you will have plenty of options, on the 27th of march they will be on stage here in Berlin. Mastermind Tominous was lately answering some questions for our rubric "What would your muse be ... ?", so find out where all the inspiration for his many ideas are coming from.

What would your muse be ..."

The Berlin based designer Aleks Kurkowski.

What would your muse be if it was ...

a book: "The sorrows of young Werther" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
a movie: Blade Runner
a city or place: A small meadow in the middle of a forest
a sound or tune: Silence
a magazine: I don't read magazines
an inspirational quote or a motto: "Trotze, so bleibt dir der Sieg." from Friedrich Hebbel which means "Defy and you'll keep the victory.".
an artist: Rick Owens, Caspar David Friedrich
a style icon: I don't have any

Black, edgy, sustainable - this is an attempt to describe what Aleks Kurkowskis designs are all about. After seeing her latest collection "romanticism & reality" at Berlin Fashion Week we instantly became fans of the Berlin-based designer. Her fashion is minimalistic but expressive, characterful and timeless - Avantgarde made in Berlin. That made us curious, we wanted to know more about the label. So this time in our rubric "What would your muse be ... ", you get to find out what the designer Aleks Kurkowski is inspired by.

Who not only wants to read but shop Aleks Kurkowski better shows up her new studio in Berlin on the 7th of March for a Get Togehter Stock & Sample Sale with the opportunity to save up to 70% on men's- and womenswear.

What would your muse be if it was ...

a book: One of the first books I read as a child, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. I have never really been into fantasy literature, but this just blew my mind and really got me into reading at young age.

a movie: This is a tricky one, been so many greats. A Clockwork Orange, directed by Stanley Kubrick ... one of the craziest classics.
a city or place: Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon. Visited Vietnam when I was 23 years old, a while ago now. I absolutely loved it. A fascinating city.
a sound or tune: I do a lot of surfing, so for me ... the sound of breaking waves.
a magazine: I have always been obsessed with adventure, National Geographic magazine.
an inspirational quote or a motto: We know what we are, but know not what we may be. William Shakespeare
an artist: Been a huge fan of Jonathan Yeo.
a style icon: The king of cool, Steve McQueen.

With my liking for Pop Art, it was only a matter of time for me, to find out about the art of Conrad C. Jones. When I discovered his work, I immediately fell in love with the bright coloured, intense portraits on newspaper collages. I'm really into his daring use of vivid colours, but the reduced contours, the aesthetical simplicity of the portraits are also speaking for itself. With this mixture of styles and material the artist creates somthing very unique. But Conrad C. Jones isn't just a painter, he is a photographer too. Exclusive on Anti.Muse you can now find out more about the artist from England. To stay updated about his work you can follow him on facebook too.
