Es gibt Sportarten, die sind uncool und es gibt welche, die sind cool, ja attraktiv sogar. Das Skaten gehört wohl eher zu den letzteren. Ich meine, mal ehrlich, Ollies, Flips, Slides und Grinds - geht's cooler?! Wer bekommt beim Zuschauen nicht sofort Lust darauf, es auch mal mit einem Board zu probieren?! Auch der Style mit den markanten Skatersocks ist oft zum Hingucken. Ende der sechziger Jahre waren diese, auch Tubesocks genannt, sehr beliebt in den USA. Damals haben nicht nur Skater sie getragen, sie waren bei einer ganzen Generation gefragt. Irgendwann haben sie sich zum Markenzeichen der Skatekultur entwickelt, heute sind sie wieder über die Grenzen der Szene hinaus populär. Woran das liegt? Sie sind wandelbar, bequem und irgendwie sexy. Wir lieben Skatersocks, habt ihr auch welche im Schrank?

Skaten und Charity? Passt zusammen wie Topf auf Deckel, wie die Faust auf's Auge, wie das Herz am rechten Fleck und Tony Hawk auf's Skateboard. Skate-aid, Skateistan und Amigo Skate bringen Skateboards, Selbstvertrauen und Bildung in Communities, die nicht viele Ressourcen haben. Schaut doch mal auf deren Seiten vorbei und findet heraus, wie ihr die Missionen dieser NGO's unterstützen könnt.

Some sports are cooler than others, don't you agree?! Some are even attractive. Think skating - I mean, ollies, flips, slides and grinds, can it get cooler?! Also the typical look with the remarkable skatersocks is pretty fresh. By the end of the sixties skatersocks, also called tubesockes, have been really famous in the US. Back then not just skaters wore them, they were popular among a whole generation. At some point they became a trademark for the skateculture. Today they're popular again, also outside of the scene. Why? Cause they're comfortable, versatile and even sexy in way. We love skatersocks, do you have a pair in your closet?

Do you ever think about the rainforest? Me neither, until I watched lot's and lot's of documentaries on youtube one night. I was shocked to find out that from the 1950ies on we managed to cut down the rainforests over half. Hard to think about the fact that, if you use simple mathematics, in a few years there might be no rainforest anymore. Rainforests are millions of years old. About 30.000.000 millions of different amazing animals and plants live and grow in there. Every two seconds, an area as big as a football field is eliminated. The consequence? Not only leads this to species extinction but also climate change is being accelerated and I guess you all heard about that. So what can we do about it?

- use recycled paper

- buy less meat since most feedingstuff contains rainforest products

- avoid products with palm oil (most convenience products, biofuel)

- don't buy products made out of tropical wood

- you can also join earth hour

- spread the word about the issue

- you can connect with WWF or other initiatives to stay up to date or get engaged

Meine Rubrik "Shortcuts - Bits 'n Pieces from the World of Alternative Fashion and Culture" dreht sich, naja, eben um genau das. Jeden Montag schreibe ich hier über Dinge, die gemäß meiner Definition in einem weiten Sinne mit Alternative Fashion und Culture zu tun haben, Dinge über die ich im Laufe einer Woche gestolpert bin, Dinge die mich interessiert haben oder Dinge, die mir gefallen haben. Das können Bücher sein, Artikel, Kollektionen, Alternative Fashion Labels, künstlerische Projekte oder andere Dinge, die ich spannend und erwähnenswert finde. In der letzten Woche habe ich die Fashion Doku "The True Cost" gesehen und davon will euch in der heutigen Ausgabe von "Shortcuts - Bits 'n Pieces from the World of Alternative Fashion and Culture" berichten.

"The True Cost" ist eine Fashion Doku von Andrew Morgan, die erstmalig beleuchtet, unter welchen Umständen Fast Fashion produziert wird. Ich weiß ich bin spät dran mit meiner Berichterstattung, kam der Film doch schon Ende Mai diesen Jahres heraus. Zum ersten Mal gesehen habe ich ihn dann aber doch erst letzte Woche.

Eigentlich wissen wir alle, wie es hinter der Fassade von Fast Fashion Brands aussieht. Wir können es nicht abstreiten oder verleugnen, es war oft in den Nachrichten - man denke an die Primark Skandale oder an den Einsturz einer Fast Fashion Fabrik in Bangladesh vor einigen Jahren. Auch wenn man mal rational darüber nachdenkt, wie es zu solchen Billigpreisen kommen kann, wird einem schnell klar, dass etwas nicht stimmen kann in dieser Rechnung, aber wir stellen zu wenig Fragen und sind zu gut im Verdrängen und so kam es, dass ich letzte Woche weinend vor meinem Laptop saß, als ich "The True Cost" gesehen habe. Diese Doku zwingt einen wirklich dazu, sein eigenes Konsumverhalten mal kritisch zu hinterfragen. Es ist schwer danach zum gewöhnlichen "Shoppinghverhalten" überzugehen, bevor man den nächsten unüberlegten Impulskauf macht denkt man lieber zwei Mal nach. Ich möchte nicht der moralisierende Zeigefinger sein, aber wenn du wissen willst, wer deine Kleidung macht und du ein bisschen Zeit übrig hast, dann schau dir den Film ruhig mal an, und lass mich wissen, was er mit dir gemacht hat.

"The True Cost" is a documetary by Andrew Morgan about the circumstances, under wich (not only) fast fashion is being produced in third world countries. I know, I'm late on this one. The movie was already released in may this year, but it wasn't until last week, since I finally saw it.

Of course we all know what's going on more or less. We can't deny it, it was in the news many times - the Primark scandals or the collapse of fast fashion factories in Bangladesh - and to think rational, what else can make a top cost 5,- € and some new pants only 10,- € but the circumstances under wich they are produced?! But we rarely ask questions and we're really good in blocking the truth out sometimes, and so I found myself crying in front of my laptop while watching "The True Cost" last week. This documentary really forces you to think about your own consumerism, it's hard to go back to "normal" after watching it, it makes you think twice before mindelessly purchasing the next item. I really don't want to be a moralizing finger pointing out on you, but if you want to know about the people making your clothes and have a little time, go see the movie and let me know what you think.

Neulich bin ich im www mal wieder über ein großartiges Kunstprojekt gestolpert. Ich fand es so toll, dass ich es einfach mit euch teilen musste. Es ist ein Projekt, das den Tod dahin zurück holt, wo er hingehört, nämlich mitten ins Leben. Es ist doch so, dass er unweigerlich zum Leben gehört, der Tod, und trotzdem ist er in unserer Gesellschaft tabuisiert. Das Projekt "Before I die" möchte zur Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Sterblichkeit anregen, es stellt die Frage: "Was willst du noch tun mit deinem Leben?" und engagiert sich somit auch für ein intensiveres Dasein im Hier und Jetzt. Die Künstlerin Candy Chang initiierte das Projekt, nachdem sie selber einen ihr sehr nahe stehenden, lieben Menschen verlor. An Öffentlichen Plätzen hat sie, mit mittlerweile vielen, vielen Mitstreitern, schwarze Wände aufgestellt, auf die Passanten ihre Gedanken, ihre Wünsche an das Leben schreiben können. Weltweit gibt es bereits über 300 "Before I die"-Wände in über 50 Ländern. Ist das nicht toll?! Es gibt auch ein Buch zum Projekt und falls du dich inspiriert fühlst - es gibt sogar ein Toolkit zur Multiplikation. Was möchtest du noch tun oder erleben bevor du stirbst? Hast du dir darüber schon mal Gedanken gemacht? Ich finde das Projekt großartig. Ich habe schon öfters über Fragen wie diese nachgedacht, aber es ist immer wieder von Neuem wichtig sich damit auseinander zu setzen, denn wir haben nur dieses eine Leben. Ich zum Beispiel würde bevor ich sterbe noch liebend gerne skaten und surfen können, ein Instrument erlernen, in einem Haus am Meer leben und freiberuflich Schreiben. Was habt ihr noch für Wünsche? Was würdet ihr auf eine "Before I die"-Wand schreiben?

Lately I discovered an awesome art project in the worldwide web and I was so overwhelmed that I just got to share this with you. It's a project that brings death back where it belongs, right into the middle of life. Cause that's just how it is, death is a part of life, but however it is a taboo in our society. The project "Before I die" wants people to think about their own mortality and with this, it wants people think about their life. The artist Candy Chang started this project, just as she lost someone she really, really loved. In public places, she and her many, many allies, arranged black walls on which people could left their thoughts and wishes for life. There're already 300 "Before I die"-walls worldwide in over 50 countrys. Isn't this fabulous?! There's a book about the project and if you feel animated there's even a toolkit for "Before I die"-walls. What do you want to do or experience before you die? Have you ever thought about that? I think this is a really fabulous project, I do often think about questions like these, what do I want to do with my life, what are my goals if you want so, but it is important to keep on thinking about questions like these, cause we only have one life to live. Before I die, I, for myself, want to learn how to skate and surf, I want to play an instrument, live in a house next to the sea and want to live of writing. What are your wishes?
