Top 10 Alternative Fashion Must Have's - Part II: Boots

by - März 19, 2014

Alternative Fashion is a playground for fashion addicts who aren't that much interested in mainstream fashion. Influenced by music and subculture Alternative Fashion is about experimenting with different style elements, it's about expression. In my new series "Top Ten Alternative Fashion Must Have's" it's all about the keypieces that, in my opinion define an Alternative Fashion look very well. In part one it was all about the leather jacket, which for example belongs to the iconic Punk look as well as to an Rock 'n Roll outfit. The same with boots - which I have to admit I'm addicted to.

In the book "Talking Fashion" (about which I'm going to write an article very soon) I've stumbled upon this interesting quote by Raf Simons: "I'm interested in brands like Dr. Martens or Fred Perry because they have a connection to so many different subcultures. (...) In the 1980ies for example Dr. Martens boots were not only worn by the new-beat-kids in belgium, parallel they were popular in totally different scenes. (...) Anyhow one can wonder, how it happens, that totally different scenes, which are in each case very proud of their own style, refer to the same brand in such an affirmative way." - exactly this is, why I'm so facinated by fashion in general and by Alternative Fashion especially - everyone has the same starting point, but at the same time everyone tries to express different things through fashion. So fashion is a medium, a code, a language.

Originally boots were the shoes of the proletariat and for this reason they later became kind of a statement for the skinheads and punks who wanted to express their relatedness with the working class through wearing boots. To this day boots belong to the typical style of different subcultures - so I think boots are, beside the leather jacket, another Alternative Fashion Must Have. How many boots do you own and who inspired you to buy your first pair?

  3. I absolutely adore boots; I must have about four or five pairs now, with aspirations for more; they're so practical and go with everything. I don't tend to buy brands (particularly DMs, as the quality in relation to the rising price of recent years is shocking), but I do believe in buying good quality boots to last.

  4. Wow, now you have me thinking back! I wore a lot of "fashion boots" in the 80s as I wasn't really into wearing sneakers, but I bought my first pair of leather boots at 15 and I've been wearing combat/Doc style boots ever since......and that's almost 20 years.

I love these photos of your boot collection!!!!

Bin gespannt was noch kommt :-)

  6. Awww. Will sie alle haben? *_* :D
Hmm..meine ersten Boots waren Doc-Martens-Look-Alikes. :D
Heute stehen eher Nieten-Boots in meinem Schuhschrank.
